Bridal Shower History

Bridal showers date back in the 1500’s-1600’s, which began in Holland. A young Dutch girl from a prominent family fell madly in love with a young miller. She wanted to marry the miller, but unfortunately her father and family disapproved the marriage because of his stature and did not provide any dowry to the couple. Without the dowry, the father thought that the couple wouldn’t be able to get married. When friends heard about her father not providing any dowry, the friends and community felt sorry, and they all got together bringing gifts. They “showered” the couple with gifts so they could establish a home. The father was so overwhelmed from the outpouring of all the people, he and the family consented to the marriage and provided the gifts for their happy home. From that day onwards, it has become a custom for the future bride’s friends and family to shower her with gifts before she starts the happiest journey of her life.
